5 Steps To An Easier Diaper Change

Updated: Oct 4, 2018

Having children is one of the most rewarding experiences a parent can have in their life. From the first smile to the first steps, everything seems delightful. But from day one of parenthood, changing a child’s diaper is one of the messiest, smelliest and most dreadful occurrences that can happen at any time of the day. Changing a diaper doesn’t have to be a great ordeal when you follow these 5 steps to an easy diaper change.

5. Disposable or Cloth?

Whether you use Pampers Swaddlers Diapers or Charlie Banana Cloth Diapers, a diaper is a diaper and it will get the job done. Always find one that is FLEXIBLE and NATURAL. Many brands of diapers include different chemicals/fragrances that can cause irritation on sensitive skin, so be sure to check out how the diaper is made. Disposable diapers are generally thought to be more hygienic, given that they can be immediately discarded after use. Cloth diapers require a bit more work because they have to be washed after every use, but can save some money in the long run even considering the initial higher purchase cost per unit as well as the ongoing costs of laundering them.

4. “On-the-go” Wipes

You might be thinking, “Aren’t all baby wipes the same?” The answer is: absolutely not! Scented or unscented, hypoallergenic, and alcohol? To put it simply, read the ingredients to understand how they could possibly affect your baby’s skin. With scented wipes, methylisothiazolinone (MI for short) and alcohol are known irritants of the skin, which can result in the unexpected use of topical ointments. No parent wants to discover rashes on their child. It is recommended to buy something simple with less harmful ingredients. To make the wiping process a bit easier, I recommend purchasing an “on-the-go” wipe holder. They are very thin and portable so there’s no fuss when grabbing a wipe quickly.

3. Creams

Some parents don’t know whether to apply topical creams or not. It really depends how well your diapers agree with your child. If your child is more prone to getting a rash, certain ointments can prevent and heal this. A&D Ointment, Burt’s Bees, CeraVe and anything organic and unscented would be my go-to creams, only if needed. Less is more! If your child has inherited magical genes where they don’t get any kind of rash without the use of creams or ointments, all the power to them!

2. Distractors

You might be thinking, “What is a distractor?” Well, almost eight times out of ten, your son or daughter will NOT be happy knowing that you’re about to remove their full diaper and will attempt to fight you with their screams and squirms. An easy solution to this is to distract them by allowing them to briefly enjoy a toy until you are finished with the dirty work. A pacifier may also serve as a good option, but not for too long as they may develop a long term dependency for it. Other options could be to ask a friend to join, have a change in scenery or have the child pick out their next diaper.

You made it! You’re finally done changing a diaper (hopefully) with minimal damage. But now, where do you put the dirty diaper and baby wipes?
